Richmond is a city located in Contra Costa County, CA. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 103,701. Richmond is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a member of the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area regional planning and development agency. The City of Richmond was incorporated on August 7, 1905. It was founded by former California governor Henry J. Crocker and Frederick Townsend HenryMills, who named it after Richmond-upon-Thames in London, England. The City of Richmond was the site of a major shipyard during World War II, and it was also home to a large Kaiser Shipyard. Today, Richmond is known for its waterfront parks and its abundance of public art. It is also home to the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park, which commemorates the contributions of women and minorities during World War II.
