Oakland is the largest city and the county seat of Alameda County, California, United States. A major West Coast port city, Oakland is the largest city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, the eighth-largest city in the state, and the 47th-largest city in the United States. With a population of 425,195 as of 2019, it serves as a trade center for the San Francisco Bay Area; its Port of Oakland is the busiest port for San Francisco Bay, all of Northern California, and fifth busiest in the United States. An act to incorporate the city was passed on May 4, 1852, and incorporation was later approved on March 25, 1854, which officially made Oakland a city. The city continued to grow despite the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. By 1920 it had a population of over 136,000 people. In 1930 its population reached 165,000 people. Meanwhile, on October 2nd 1923 Oakland’s TCP Stadium (later renamed Kezar Stadium) became home to one of the most famous sporting events in history: The First Football World Championship Game between Stanford University and Massillon High School. During WWII shipbuilding became a major industry in Oakland as part of the war effort; after the war tourism and business created new job opportunists making Oakland once again a prosperous City rich in culture blending old traditions with new found success stories. After WWII ended many GIs used their VA Home Loan benefits to purchase houses in rapidly growing suburbs like Lake Merritt Gardens which quickly became one of America’s first planned communities with Jazz Age architecture. More than 60% of Oakland’s residences were destroyed by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake; however redevelopment and reconstruction have brought new life back into downtown and various residential neighborhoods across the City Of Oaks.
