A Brief History of Los Altos
Los Altos is a suburb of San Francisco with a population of about 30,000. Los Altos was founded in 1906 when a Southern Pacific Railroad executive purchased 140 acres from Sarah Winchester, of the Winchester rifle fortune. Those 140 acres became a bustling railroad town, which was eventually incorporated as the 11th city in Santa Clara county in 1952. Los Altos is no longer a location for train travel, and has grown into a thriving and safe suburb that is rated one of the best places to live in the Bay Area.
Why People Love Living in Los Altos
While Los Altos is just a 45-minute drive from San Francisco and a 20-minute drive from San Jose for all the convenience and entertainment of a big city, it is a small, safe community with a quaint downtown. Residents of Los Altos love how family friendly it is, with excellent schools, low crime rates, and wonderful weather. Los Altos is not known for its nightlife, but had a peaceful and comforting small town appeal in the larger setting of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.
