Change of Address Checklist: Who to Contact When You Move

Moving to a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. There are many things to consider and take care of, from packing up all your belongings to changing your address with everyone who needs to know.

To help make the transition a little easier, we’ve compiled a checklist of all the people and organizations you’ll need to notify about your move. So before you start packing boxes, take a few minutes to review this list and ensure you have all your bases covered.

Before You Move:

Moving to a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be a bit stressful. There are so many things to remember to do, and it’s easy to forget something important. To help make the process a little smoother.

Here’s a checklist of things to do before you move:

Change your address with the post office. This way, you’ll still get your mail even if you forget to forward it.
Update your address with any companies or organizations you’re a member of. This includes your bank, credit card company, insurance company, etc.
Notify your friends and family of your new address. You don’t want anyone accidentally sending your mail to your old address!
Pack up all of your belongings. This includes everything from clothes to furniture to dishes. Label all boxes, so you know what goes where in your new home.
Arrange for transportation for yourself and your belongings. If you’re driving, map out your route and ensure you have enough gas. If you’re flying, check the weight and size restrictions for luggage so you can pack accordingly.

Following these steps will help ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible. With a little planning, you can avoid any surprises down the road.

After You Move:

Moving to a new address is an exciting time. But it’s also when you must carefully update your information with the appropriate people and organizations.

Here’s a checklist of who you need to notify about your change of address:

The Post Office: You can do this online, by mail, or in person at your local post office. Include any family members or businesses that receive mail at your old address.
Your bank: Update your address for accounts with a bank or credit union. This includes savings, checking, investment accounts, and any loans or lines of credit.
Your employer: Ensure your employer has your new address to send your paycheck and other important documents to the right place.
The IRS: If you receive any tax documents from the IRS, you’ll need to update your address to continue receiving them.
Your insurance company: Whether it’s health insurance, auto insurance, or homeowners/renters insurance, notify your insurer of your new address.
Your child’s school: If you have a child in school, you’ll need to update their records with your new address and contact information.
Your doctor and other healthcare providers: It’s important to update your medical records, so notify your doctor and other healthcare providers of your new address and contact information.
The DMV: If you have a driver’s license or state ID card, you must update your address with the DMV. You may also need to update the registration on your car if you’ve moved to a new state.
Your cable/internet provider: If you have cable TV or internet service at home, contact your provider with your new address to transfer service without interruption.
Your gym or other clubs/organizations: If you belong to clubs or organizations (gym membership, library membership, etc.), update your information to continue using their services without interruption.

As you can see, there are many people and organizations you’ll need to contact when you move. Give yourself ample time to do this so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. And once you’ve gone through the list, take a deep breath and enjoy your new home!
